About
Introduction:
Hello!! My name is Anna Laurence, I'm an 18 year old singer-songwriter from New Zealand and France. I was born in Dunedin, New Zealand, and I’ve loved music and dance since I was a toddler - singing along to my favourite songs whenever I could. I grew up with French and Swiss parents, along with my lovely younger sister Lucy. We are both lucky enough to speak both French and English fluently, and being able to visit our family in Europe once a year. I have always loved travelling, and often find comfort in being in a new place, especially if I am surrounded by nature or animals. I am a sensitive and passionate person, and writing music is my way of expressing my thoughts and feelings.
How did my music/songwriting journey begin?
I began songwriting at 13 by joining a school club, where I wrote my first song for a young cancer survivor. I realised how much of an impact my music could have, which encouraged me to keep writing. At 14, I won two national songwriting competitions — Hook, Line & Sing-a-Long and Uke-Can-Do-It. Since then, I’ve released 5 songs, refined my voice, musicianship, and songwriting skills, while also teaching myself production and multiple instruments.
Who or what inspires me
I draw inspiration from the people, but especially the nature surrounding me, often writing metaphorical lyrics. My musical inspirations include Billie Eilish, Lizzy McAlpine, Norah Jones, Beabadoobee, Billie Marten, and Adrianne Lenker - to name a few. Along with this, my travels, poems, and my own emotions play a big role too.
My accomplishments
In 2023, I had the incredible opportunity to be the support act for Sonia Wilson and Nigel Gavin’s South Island album release tour, performing my originals and covers. In 2024, I released my debut single ‘Lavender Moon’, which I recorded, produced, and released independently, followed by Missing Teeth, Kondalilla, and Christmas Wish. I was also published in the Australian ‘Teen Breathe’ magazine, along with winning the Robert Burns Poetry competition. This year, I am releasing an E.P, and performing at various venues and (hopefully) music festivals. I also plan to build my music industry connections and move to Auckland in the near future.
Things I like to do outside of music
When I’m not listening or making music, I love baking, dancing, watching movies or T.V series, doing crafts, laughing at silly memes, writing poetry, and spending time with friends (and my cat!). But even then, music is always in the background—I can’t escape it!
My ultimate dream
My dream is to become a full time artist, or maybe even a producer; sharing my music and stories with the world, helping people feel less alone.
Thank you
Thank you for listening and supporting me. I'm endlessly grateful for my friends, teachers, mentors, and especially my family for encouraging my journey. Be sure to let me know which city you’d like me to perform in next! <3
